Martha Combe was the wife of Thomas Combe, patron of the arts. In the 1850s, Millais lived with the Combes, who were “among the first to recognize and encourage the efforts of the Pre-Raphaelite School,” and who treated Millais “with almost parental consideration.” Millais remained in contact with Mrs. Combe until her death.
