Henry Wells was a miniature and portrait painter. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1870, and throughout his career vocally supported the constitutional rights and privileges of the Academy. In 1895, when Leighton was frequently traveling abroad, he nominated Wells to act as deputy in his absence.
