J. E. Mayall, was summoned to photograph Queen Victoria and her family) and his "whole-hearted" admiration for Gladstone and others like him, who had earned their position in the world through intelligence and hard work; his antipathy toward Roman Catholicism; his sense of social inferiority; his views on photography as an art form; and his photographic process.
