Text

“Artists at Home.” –The sixth part of this fine-art publication contains photographs with biographical sketches of Edward John Poynter, R.A., Thomas Oldham Barlow, R.A., Robert Walker Macbeth, A.R.A., George Adolphus Storey, A.R.A., and the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, M.P.  The portraits, surrounded as they are with the handiwork of the several gentlemen named, are excellent representations of the originals; but why Mr. Gladstone should be put down as “an artist at home” is not clearly defined, unless he may be claimed from the fact of his being “an honorary member and professor of ancient history in the Royal Academy.” Otherwise although the portrait will no doubt be very acceptable to a great many, we cannot conceive its right of insertion in such a production as “Artists at Home.”
