NOTE.

It may be readily imagined that Mr. J. P. Mayall’s task as the photographer of “Artists at Home” has not been an easy one. The recent improvement in photography by the introduction of the Rapid Dry Plate has alone rendered the thing possible. In Mr. Mayall’s hands, the photographs may fairly lay claim to a success beyond the average, more especially when the difficult task of photographing interiors is taken into account. The process by which these photographs have been reproduced on copper-plates, though not absolutely new, has now for the first time been so modified as to make it possible to give pictures which are not merely absolute facsimiles of the originals, but which bring out admirably the middle tints so often found wanting in the photograph from which they are taken, and which have hitherto been a characteristic only of high-class steel engravings. It may be said, the finer the photograph the finer the reproduced result. The intention of the work will be to introduce the homes of those artists whose names have acquired a deserved celebrity, thereby making “Artists at Home” an historical record of the famous artists of our time.
