Description: "Photograph of Mr MacWhirter A R A, & interior of his studio at No1. Abbey Road, St Johns Wood."

Description

The artist sits is a large, mostly unfurnished studio before an easel that supports a large, framed landscape painting. He holds a palette and brush and looks at a sketch propped on a pile of books atop a wooden chair just to the right of the easel. A grand fireplace appears on the rear wall, below a gallery lined with a railing that descends the stairs in the left-hand corner of the composition. To the left of the railing are two more easels holding framed landscape paintings. The floor is bare, apart from an animal skin before the hearth.

“Our Note Book.” The Illustrated London News 35 (July 12, 1884): 26. "The June number of “Artists at Home” contains portraits and views of the studios of G. F. Watts, R.A., W. H. Thornycroft, A.R.A., W. F. Yeames, R. A., and J. MacWhirter, A.R.A.  Considering that this is a purely artistic work, it is surprising that the artists represented have not exercised a more beneficial control over the arrangement and production of the pictures. . . ."
