Subject

Act II, scene II, of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, when the wife of Caesar, Calphurnia, implores her husband not to go to the senate house, where he will be assassinated.

Description

Two heavily draped figures, Caesar and Calphurnia, stand with their backs to the viewer in the center of a grand Roman interior with polished marble floors and columns. They look out onto an ominous night sky, filled with heavy clouds and the illuminated path of a falling comet, toward the silhouette of an armed guard standing on a parapet. A painted marble bust of Caesar is eerily lit from below, casting an exaggerated shadow on the wall.
