Description

Lawson sits to the right of the composition, looking directly at the viewer. One leg is on the floor, while the other rests awkwardly on the rung of the tall stool in front of him. On the stool is a clay bust of a middle-aged gentleman. The floor around Lawson is relatively bare, but arranged along the edges of the room are sculptures placed on stools and pedestals, their pale forms contrasting eerily with the dark walls. On the left-hand side of the image is a model's stand with an empty chair, a cloth draped over it. On the floor leading to this stand is a single rug, the only object in the portrait that is purely decorative.
