Eduard von Steinle was a professor of historical painting at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt and a member of the Nazarenes, a group that aimed to revive honesty and spirituality in Christian art. He served as Leighton’s artistic mentor during his time at Frankfurt, and they remained in contact until Steinle’s death.
